Notion chart limits, and what to do about each
Notion's built-in charts cover a lot, and Notion documents where they stop. Each limit below comes with Notion's own sentence, the page it is on, and a way around it.

The limits, with sources
Text in quotation marks is copied from Notion’s pages as they read on 29 September 2026. ChartOmodo is a Notion integration, not a Notion product, and these pages can change. If one has, tell us through Support and we will fix this page.
| Limit | What Notion says | Source | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charts on the Free plan | If you're on a Free plan, you can create one chart, and if you're on a paid plan, you can create unlimited charts. | Notion help: Charts, Notion pricing | A paid Notion plan lifts the cap. Or build the next charts in ChartOmodo: its Free plan has 5 charts, each pasted into a Notion page as an embed block. |
| Chart types | Vertical bar chart, Horizontal bar chart, Line chart, Donut chart or Number chart | Notion help: Charts | ChartOmodo draws 18, 5 of them on Free. The docs list each type and the plan it starts on. |
| A rollup as an axis | Your X and Y axes won't be able to show rollups, buttons, unique IDs, files and media, or formulas resulting in a list of outputs. | Notion help: Charts | Notion’s written rule leaves room for a formula that returns one value. In ChartOmodo, pick the rollup itself as the axis. Both routes, step by step. |
| A formula that returns a list | Same sentence: an axis cannot show formulas resulting in a list of outputs. | Notion help: Charts | Rewrite the formula so it returns a single value. For formulas based on relations and rollups, Notion only warns about speed: Certain formulas, like formulas based on relations and rollups and other complex formulas, may cause charts to take a little bit longer to load. |
| Donut charts | Your donut chart won't be able to show rollups, buttons, unique IDs, files and media, and certain formulas. | Notion help: Charts | ChartOmodo charts rollup and formula columns like any other property. Its donut starts on the Starter plan. |
| Dashboards | Dashboard views are available on Business and Enterprise plans.Notion announced the dashboard view in its release notes of 26 March 2026. Notion lists Business at $20 per member per month billed yearly, $24 billed monthly. | Notion help: Dashboards, Notion release notes, 26 March 2026, Notion pricing | ChartOmodo dashboards start on the Starter plan: several charts on one grid, shared into a Notion page through one embed link from the Starter plan. How to set one up. |
| A rollup of a rollup | Can I rollup a rollup? Unfortunately not, as this could create unintended loops. | Notion help: Relations and rollups | This is a database rule, not a chart rule, and ChartOmodo does not change it: it reads the value Notion computed. Roll up the original property. |
Why a rollup does not show in a Notion chart
In a Notion chart you cannot pick the rollup as an axis. That is by design: Notion’s help page says an axis cannot show rollups, buttons, unique IDs, files and media, or formulas resulting in a list of outputs.
There are two ways through.
- Stay in Notion. Add a formula property that works the number out from the relation and returns one value, then chart the formula. Notion’s page does not rule this out. It only warns:
Certain formulas, like formulas based on relations and rollups and other complex formulas, may cause charts to take a little bit longer to load.
What it rules out is a formula whose result is a list. This follows Notion’s written rule. We have not tested it in a live workspace. - Chart the rollup itself. ChartOmodo reads a calculated rollup (sum, average, min, max) as the number Notion computed, so you pick it as an axis like any number property.
The rollup guide walks through both.
Two things Notion’s charts are not limited in
Neither of these is a limit.
- Export. A Notion chart exports as PNG and SVG:
Select Copy as PNG, Download PNG, or Download SVG.
ChartOmodo exports PNG and SVG as well, except charts drawn by its Chart.js engine, which export PNG. - Showing a chart outside Notion. Publish the page that holds the chart, and Notion lets you embed that published page in a website of your own (Notion help: Public pages and web publishing). ChartOmodo does not do this: its embeds are currently limited to Notion pages, and other sites are blocked from framing them.
What you trade for the extra room
- Freshness. A ChartOmodo chart is not live. It re-reads its database on a timer set by your plan, sooner when Notion reports an edit or someone presses Refresh on the embed.
- Access. ChartOmodo needs you to connect Notion once and choose the databases it may read. How your data is handled.
- Plans. Some chart types, dashboards and date periods start on a paid ChartOmodo plan. Pricing has the current list.
If vertical bar, horizontal bar, line, donut, and number charts on a paid Notion plan cover what you need, Notion’s own charts are the simpler choice. The comparison page puts the two side by side.
Questions
How many charts can I make on Notion's Free plan?
1 chart. Notion's help page says: "If you're on a Free plan, you can create one chart, and if you're on a paid plan, you can create unlimited charts."
Why is my rollup not showing in a Notion chart?
Notion's chart axes do not accept rollup properties. The help page lists what an axis cannot show: rollups, buttons, unique IDs, files and media, or formulas resulting in a list of outputs. A formula that returns one value is not on that list. Notion only warns that formulas based on relations and rollups may make the chart slower to load. We have not tested that route in a live workspace.
Can a Notion chart use a formula?
Notion's help page rules out one kind: "Your X and Y axes won't be able to show rollups, buttons, unique IDs, files and media, or formulas resulting in a list of outputs." For formulas based on relations and rollups it only adds a warning: "Certain formulas, like formulas based on relations and rollups and other complex formulas, may cause charts to take a little bit longer to load."
Which Notion plans include dashboards?
Business and Enterprise. Notion announced the dashboard view in its release notes of 26 March 2026.
Can I show a Notion chart outside Notion?
Yes. Publish the page that holds the chart, and Notion lets you embed that published page in a website of your own. ChartOmodo embeds are the other way round: they are currently limited to Notion pages.
Can I export a Notion chart as an image?
Yes, as PNG and SVG. Notion's help page says: "Select Copy as PNG, Download PNG, or Download SVG."
Does a ChartOmodo chart update live?
No. Each chart re-reads its database on a timer set by your plan, sooner when Notion reports an edit or someone presses Refresh on the embed.
