Study tracker chart from a Notion database

A study log with one row per session: the course, the date, the hours, and a score when the session was a quiz or an exam. Three charts answer what a student actually asks: am I putting the hours in, where do they go, and is it paying off.

Hours per week

Free plan

Hours summed per week of the session date. Eight weeks of a term, one bar each, so a slack week stands out before the exam does.

Hours by course

Free plan

The same hours summed per course. Four courses, four slices: the course that takes the most time is the biggest one.

Average score by course

Free plan

Average of the score column per course, with a filter that keeps only quiz and exam rows. A study session has no score, so it would not move the average anyway; the filter says what the chart means.

The data behind it

The first 10 of 48 rows of Sample · Study tracker. Every chart above is built from these columns and nothing else.

How to build this in Notion

  1. Log one row per session. Each row is one sitting. Add a select property for the course, a date property for the day, a number property for the hours, a number property for the score, and a select property for the type with the options Study, Quiz and Exam. Leave the score empty on a study session.
  2. Connect the log. Create an account, open Data sources and connect Notion, then share the study database on Notion's screen. ChartOmodo reads the rows and never writes to them.
  3. Chart hours per week. Pick Bar, set X-axis (category) to the date, Y-axis (value) to hours with Sum, and Date grouping to Week. One bar per week of the term.
  4. Split the hours by course. Make a second chart with Pie, the course on the X-axis and the same Sum of hours. The slice sizes are the share of your time each course gets.
  5. Average the scores, then embed. For the third chart pick Bar, put the course on the X-axis, the score on the Y-axis with Average, and add a filter: type is not Study. Copy each embed link and paste it into your study page with /embed.

Hours and scores sit in the same rows, so all three charts read one database: log a session once and every chart that uses it counts it.
